The volume of money in circulation in Romania at the end of December 2017 reached 63.4 billion RON (17.3 billion EUR), an increase of 16% since the end of 2016. The monetary aggregate M1, which includes currency in circulation and overnight deposits, was 210.7 billion RON (57.6 billion EUR), an increase of 17% on an annual basis. The amount of the monetary aggregate M2, which includes quasi-money (deposits with agreed upon maturity of up to 2 years, as well as other types of special deposits) is 350.6 billion RON (75 billion EUR).
For comparison, the money in circulation in Bulgaria at the end of December 2017 was 14.1 billion BGN (7.2 billion EUR), an increase of almost 11% compared to 2016. The M1 aggregate is 47.7 billion BGN (24.4 billion EUR) and has increased by 17% on an annual basis. In turn, the amount of M2 is 85.6 billion BGN (about 43.8 billion EUR).
